Rarotonga Cook Islands is one of the most enchanting of the South Pacific destinations. Many describe it as the Hawaii of yesterday - great for a holiday, easy to explore, lots of accommodation, plenty of good independent restaurants and enough attractions and day tours to keep you busy. There is something very unique and exciting in travelling around the island on a moped with the wind in your hair, passing local villages and colourful houses with the fragrance of sweet scented flowers all around.
If this is your first visit, we suggest you start at our detailed Rarotonga Travel Guide will advise you on everything from beach reviews to scenic attractions. We also review accommodations in each district with links direct to the property website so you can make a booking or enquiry for your holidays.
Raratonga is a small volcanic island with a land mass of only 26 sq. miles with pretty villages, a friendly atmosphere, lovely mountain views and hiking trails and great swimming and snorkelling beaches surrounding most of the coast. Raratonga is the main island of the Cook Islands with almost 90% of the country's tourist accommodation and lots of tour activities. The population is about 9,000, mostly indigenous Maoris and almost half living around Avarua Town on the north coast.
Raratonga climate is warm and sunny rear-round, with more rain and higher humidity between the summer months of Dec - Apr. The high season for tourism is during Christmas when New Zealanders and Australians visit during their main school holidays.
